OnePlus made their debut in the smartphone market by introducing the “Flagship Killer” OnePlus One. The phone was overkill for that price of just 21,000. The Phone did exceptionally well among consumers mainly who were fond with the android customization because this device came with Cyanogen OS which was very famous for the Stock feel of android as well as allowing customization to a great extent allowing users to make the most out of their devices. OnePlus also created hype among the fans by introducing the invite system which reached out to many people on different social media platforms.
The OnePlus One featured a Sandstone back which was something new for the consumers and it provided a nice grip and feel to the device. Unlike the slippery glass backs of other devices, OnePlus made sure that their device would last physical damages and made sure that they design the phone in such a way that gives it a premium look as well as does the job of not being fragile and fits in the hands of the consumer. The device is quite light with a weight of just 162g. OnePlus One featured in Sandstone Black and Silk White which made the device look unique. The device is really sleek and had an option between using the physical buttons below the screen on enable the on-screen buttons in the device. The power button and volume button placement were really nice as well and reachable when used with one hand. The camera is placed at the top of the rear side with LED flash and OnePlus logo is carved right below it. The Sim Tray of this device is really unique which allowed both Nano Sim as well as Micro Sim as per the need of the user.
The OnePlus One comes with a 5.5 inch LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. This display featured a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels which is approximately 401 ppi pixel density. This display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 which was considered as the best during its launch. The 5.5 inch display is decent in terms of playing high resolution content and high end games delivering the content in full HD. The display could be adjusted depending if the user wants to use the on-screen buttons or the physical buttons. Display works decent under direct sunlight and has good viewing angles as well.
The OnePlus One has Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 which was considered to be the best during the launch of the device and is a beast of a processor which can handle high end games of today’s generation after 3 years of its launch. The device packs 3 GB of ram and handles multi-tasking with ease. The down-side of this device is that it does not provide any external storage and is limited to the options of 16 GB or 64 GB which is arguably not enough for the consumer of today’s generation. The Adreno 330 GPU in this device goes well with the Snapdragon processor and can handle the high resolution content and games at high FPS. This device has a non-removable 3100 mah battery which is decent considering the Operating system of this device was optimized to give more uptime of the device and device even gave more than 6 hours of screen time with the Kitkat based android OS but the battery life depleted with the new updates of Lollipop and Marshmallow.
This device featured Cyanogen OS based on the v4.4 Kitkat during the time of launch but later version of this device featured OnePlus’ own ‘Oxygen OS’ which was made based on v5.0 Lollipop Android OS. Both of these Operating systems are good in their own aspects. One of the reasons why the geeks go for OnePlus devices is that they can install their own version of firmware without voiding the warranty of the device which no other company offers.
It has a rear camera of 13 Mega Pixel with autofocus and dual-LED flash and f/2.0 aperture. This camera has 1/3” sensor size and this sensor is quite stable and helps focusing in images quite fast. The camera also supports video recording at 2160p at 30 fps, 1080p at 60 fps, 720p at 120 fps. The camera application in Cyanogen OS is feature filled and allows various customizations such as white balance, Manual Focus and Color Tone of the pictures. The front camera of the device is 5 Mega Pixel with f/2.0 aperture and supports recording at 1080p at 30fps. The Gallery Application also allows editing of the images at amateur level and helps users with basic editing.
The major downside of OnePlus One is that it does not support 4G VoLTE and is not fully compatible with India’s Major Carrier Reliance Jio. The device also has v4.1 Bluetooth which is decent and does support file transfer at a good transfer rate. It has microUSB v2.0 which is common among the relatively old generation of android devices and is decent for the file transfer but as its common, the cables from other similar devices could be used with this device as well. OnePlus One has Wifi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac which makes the Wifi reception and network stability decent on this device.
The dual Mono speakers at the bottom of the device gives the device a good experience of surround sound and the sound output of the speakers is quite loud as well. The Full HD screen and the snapdragon processor make the device capable of playing high end content and high resolution games. The headphone output from the 3.5mm Jack is excellent and provides a good experience with the music and other sound output. The camera of this device is not so great but gives decent pictures and the camera and gallery application gives lots of options for customization of the pictures.
Being the first device released from OnePlus, The Company did an excellent job in winning the hearts of the consumers by creating a mid ranged budget phone with high end specifications. The device has flaws like lack of updates after years of its launch but it does a decent job at average use of phone like playing multimedia and browsing social media or take decent pictures. Suggestto Recommends this phone to people with no needs of heavy usage or playing really high end content.
