We haven’t seen a sport scooter in the market after the good old and sorely missed Kinetic Blaze which had to be put to rest due to the winding up of manufacturer. It was launched way ahead of its time as the Indian audience was not ready or well versed with super scooters. Time flew and our audience became more mature and specific about their life choices. The scooter market evolved in blink of an eye and various manufacturers tried their best to offer something new by offering variety of non-gear scooters catering to various audiences. One such exotic two wheeler manufacture took notice of the ever increasing demand and decided to drop a bomb in the unstoppable scooter market. Yes folks! Aprilia has finally launched the SR 150 here in India at a mouth-watering price of Rs 65000 (EX-SHOWROOM). Does it perform? You bet!

 

Looks & Design

The Aprilia SR 150 looks stunning and the design speaks of its Italian heritage. The racy design theme is eye-catching and attracts a lot of attention. The front looks sharp and edgy with that tapering nose. The twin headlamps add to the overall aggression of the front fascia. The front fairing is given a floating like appearance before streaming into the foot board. The cockpit on the SR 150 looks smart and readable but the instrument console could have been digital considering the price point and the brand. The palm grips are of good quality and felt spongy to hold. There is a passing light switch which is a very unique and welcome addition. The absence of lock clamp is shocking though. The two-tone sporty seat is a stepped up unit and can easily store a half faced helmet below.  The tail is upswept, the split grab-rails and tail-light add up to the sporty theme of the scooter.

 

Quality & Finish 

Quality is on par with rivals and there are no unwanted panel gaps or wobbly fiber parts on the body. The paint quality is top notch and we had no complaints with the fit and finish on this scooter.

 

Engine 

The 154cc four stroke engine on the Aprilia SR 150 is an air cooled unit producing 11.4hp and 11.5Nm of torque. It is the same unit which powers the Vespa however Piaggio states that the engine has been given a longer crank case to handle the chasis of the SR 150. Crank the engine and you can hear the loud-ish sporty exhaust note. Throttle response is crisp and responsive and reaches 60kmph in blink of an eye.  Till 80kmph the engine feels very much stress free with good NVH levels. The chunk of the power lies in the mid-range and the scooter can touch 120km/hr if wristed hard. The scooter feels zippy in the city thanks to the lighter weight and those chunky tyres.  The throttle response is well calibrated and the scooter jumps alive when pushed hard. Riding the SR 150 is sheer fun and the racing DNA is clearly evident.

 

 

Ride Quality 

The suspension set up on the SR 150 is too stiff given its sporty intent and riding on bad roads might leave you with a broken back. The scooter comes with a telescopic set up on the front and an offset mono-shock at the rear which is best suitable for stable roads and tight cornering. The 120/70 x 14 Vee rubbers along with the 220 mm ventilated front discs holds up the scooter well during those urgent braking circumstances. The overall braking is very predictive and confident inspiring. The scooter is mighty stable in straight lines and aggressive corners. The riding posture is comfortable and there is enough room even for tall riders. The stepped seat provides ample comfort for those long journeys.

 

 

Electricals 

The electricals on the SR 150 work great. The twin headlamp set up is good and potent enough for visibility at night. The switches, LED tail lamps, turn indicators are up to Italian standards. There are no unwanted wiring that dangles out on the body panels. However you won’t get gimmicky things like boot light, USB charger and remote fuel release.

 

Fuel Economy 

The Aprilia SR 150 managed to dish out a decent 35kmpl in the city. When ridden sedately on an empty stretch of road or the highway you can enjoy a maximum fuel efficiency of 38 kmpl.

 

Maintenance 

Piaggio is going to take care of the service issues and yes the service quality is very much on par with international standards. The service network is however not like segment leaders like Honda or Hero. Service cost is a bit on the premium side but hey! We are not complaining!

 

Suggestto Verdict 

The SR 150 is a fun, exciting and serious product that does thorough justice to its brand name. This scooter is not for the people who want modern- day features, good fuel efficiency or a big storage space. It is for those people who want to have fun and can associate themselves with a heavy brand like Aprilia. If practicality is what you are looking for then we are sorry to say, this scooter from Aprilia is a no-brainer.
