Vivo Smartphones have taken the Indian market by a storm.  It is a Chinese based Mulitnational technology company that came into existence in the year 2009.  Vivo focuses mainly on high quality audio experiences by using Hi-Fi chips in their devices. Having an Android based operating system, Vivo smartphones have been a total buy in our country.

In the year 2012, Vivo came out with the world’s thinnest smartphone named as the X1. It was also the first phone of that particular brand to use a Hi-Fi chip which was created by the American Semiconductor company Cirrus logic. The other successful smartphones by Vivo is the Xplay3s, X5Pro, X5Max and Xshot.

Within 6 years of its inception, Vivo found itself in the Top 10 Smartphones in the world. Now, in November 2016, Vivo is releasing its highly rated X9 model which is ready to compete against the giants like HTC Desire 10 Pro, Motorola Moto Z play and Oneplus 3T. The Vivo X9 is priced at Rs. 28,000 for the 64GB model and around Rs. 30,000 for the 128 GB model.  So, by the looks for it, the X9 is definitely not a budget phone.

Looks & Design

Having a complete metal finish in the front and the back, the Vivo X9 looks heavy at first sight. The smartphone is ridiculously thin which may raise questions about its durability. Compared to its competitors, this phone falls short in terms of looks and design. The Motorola Z Play infact looks more durable and sturdy.

The back panel of the Vivo X9 comprises of a back camera and a standard flash light. It has a non removable battery. The front battery comprises of a dual selfie camera which is fancy. The bottom of the front screen is the home button which also acts as a finger print scanner which can lock and unlock the phone.  It is a dual sim-card slot phone with an SD slot. The bottom of the phone has the USB slot and the audio jack slot (3.5mm). The side of the phone has the volume and the power button. The screen is fairly bright and sophisticated which turns a few heads.

Display & Resolution

The display of the Vivo X9 is highly impressive. Sized at 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, it is a super AMOLED capacitive touch screen with 16M colors. The ppi of the phone is around 401. The complete HD quality of the smart-phone is right up there with its other competitors. Apart from the dual selfie cameras, it has an ambient light sensor and a proximity sensor.

Having a super AMOLED display, the screen looks fairly pleasant. Unlike other android phones, we need to swipe up to get in to the screen brightness adjustment panel. It has a manual and an auto-brightness option which adjusts to the natural or ambient lighting. It looks very nice and the angles on the phone are also impressive. Vivo have really upped the ante when it comes to display and resolution when compared to its earlier models.

Performance & Battery

Vivo X9 falls a bit short when it is compared to the Oneplus 3T. The chipset used in the X9 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625MSM8953 while the Oneplus 3T uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821MSM8996 pro chipset.

While the OnePlus 3T uses a 3400 mAh battery, the X9 just uses a 3005 mAh battery. Considering the price of the phone, the battery and performance level of the phone should have been much better. The X9 when operated, it has a lot of pre-installed apps which makes the menu option look a bit clustered. Otherwise, there was no lag-sort of behavior whilst opening multiple programs together. It is also surprisingly fast when it comes to operating it, the responsiveness given to the app’s are soothing. The X9 has a fast charge with a Li-Polymer type of a battery.

X9’s processor is built of an OctaCore 2GHz, Cortex A53. When compared to its competitors, they play better i.e.: the OnePlus3T uses a QuadCore processor which is of a 2.35Ghz, dual core and Kryo + 1.6GHz. This means that the OnePlus 3T is much quicker than the already quick X9.

Let me tell you, the performance and battery of the X9 is good but considering the price of the device, it could have fared a bit better. Also, getting used to the UI of the X9 may take some time because it is not the usual UIs of an android smartphone.

When it comes to camera, the X9 eats its competitors 10 times out of 10. It has dual front facing camera (Flash enabled).  One being a 20Mp and the secondary front facing camera being 8Mp. The rear camera is a 16Mp capturing lens. The options inside the camera are vast which can allow us to use our own creativity and imaginations. The pictures and videos can also be taken in a 4k mode which is quite impressive. We can adjust the background blurriness in the BOKEH mode. Fine usability is available in the camera options where skin whitening, skin tine and buffing is one of them. Panaroma and HDR are also there for us to use. It has a standard f/2.0 aperture.  The sharpness and noise reduction in both, front facing and rear facing cameras is commendable. LED flash is enabled with the front and rear end cameras. Low light photography is captured with absolute finesse. The video recording is recording in 1080p (HD). It tends to be a bit shaky because it lacks optical image stabilization. The focus in the picture and video mode also sometimes loses its cementation. As a whole, the pictures and videos captured by the X9 are sweet and smooth. Clarity and subtleness is a prime quality in the X9.

Networking & communication

I don’t really get it that why smartphones don’t enable NFC (near field communications). In this age of technological advancements where everything is user-friendly and convenient, NFC should have been included (especially priced at 28,000/-). Barring that, it edges past OnePlus 3T in terms of Wifi connectivity by using a 802.11, b/g/n/n 5GHZ while the latter uses an a/ac/g/n mode. Both sim cards are 4G enabled where cannot use it simultaneously. The Sim 1 and Sim 2 are nano-eccentric slots. It also has GSM / HSPA / CDMA2000 and LTE modes for network connectivity.

Vivo X9 has a single loudspeaker at the bottom end of the phone near the USB slot. It also uses a standard audio jack of 3.5mm. It has all the standard apps for music. Supports both, mp3 and mp4 audio files. Gaming in the X9 has altogether a different experience. It has much better realistic gaming when compared to Redmi Note 4. There is no lag and sluggish behavior which can hamper the game. Plus, the super AMOLED screen does help (especially in VR)

Suggestto Verdict

The Vivo X9 is a nice smartphone despite lacking in some departments. It is a paradise for selfie lovers with a dual front facing camera which is 20mp and 8mp. Compared to its other models, the X9 stands out amongst all of them. It is a good, fast and powerful device and if you think its worth the bucks then go for it.
